What Is an Epoxy Resin River Table?

If you've been searching for a statement piece that turns a dining room, home office or living space into something truly extraordinary, a resin river table might be exactly what you're looking for.

A resin river table combines solid live-edge timber slabs with a flowing channel of epoxy resin running through the centre. The result is a piece of furniture that looks almost alive — the resin mimics the appearance of a river cutting through natural rock, with stunning depth, colour and clarity. No two are ever the same.

At Contemporary Resin Designs, we craft every river table entirely by hand to your specification, from the timber species and resin colour right down to the base design and finish.

Why Are Resin River Tables So Popular Right Now?

River tables have moved from niche craft project to sought-after interior design statement, and it's easy to see why. People are increasingly looking for furniture that tells a story — something unique that mass-produced pieces simply can't offer.

Here's what makes them so appealing:

They're completely one of a kind. The natural grain of the wood and the way resin flows and cures means no two tables are identical. You're not buying something from a catalogue; you're commissioning a piece of art.

They're built to last. Epoxy resin, once fully cured, is extremely hard-wearing — resistant to scratches, water and daily use. A well-made river table is genuinely an heirloom piece.

They work in almost any interior. Whether your home is contemporary, rustic, industrial or classic, there's a timber and resin combination that fits. Bold ocean blues, warm ambers, deep blacks, metallic golds — the design possibilities are wide open.

They're a conversation starter. Every guest who visits will want to know where it came from.

Choosing Your Timber: The Foundation of Every River Table

The timber is the soul of any river table. At Contemporary Resin Designs, we work with a range of premium hardwoods, each with its own character:

Oak is one of our most popular choices — warm golden tones, a strong grain pattern and exceptional durability. It pairs beautifully with both bold and subtle resin colours.

Walnut offers deep, rich chocolate tones and a fine grain. Through clear or lightly tinted resin, the contrast is spectacular.

Ash has a pale, open grain that works brilliantly in lighter, more contemporary spaces. The subtle colouring lets the resin take centre stage.

Elm and Burr Elm bring wild, figured grain with swirling patterns — dramatic and highly individual.

Not sure which timber is right for you? We'll guide you through options based on your space, your style and how you'll use the table.

Resin Colours and Styles: Making It Yours

This is where the real creative freedom comes in. The resin colour transforms the character of the whole piece.

Clear resin lets the timber speak for itself, creating the impression of a glass river suspended in the wood. It's elegant, understated and allows every knot, grain and figure in the timber to shine.

Ocean blues and greens are perennially popular — evoking water, calm and natural beauty. They complement oak and ash particularly well.

Metallic resins — gold, copper, silver — are increasingly in demand, creating a luxurious, contemporary effect that's unlike anything else.

Deep blacks create a bold, striking contrast, especially dramatic against lighter timbers like ash or maple.

Custom colours are available too. If you have a specific interior colour scheme, we can work with you to match or complement it.

What Size Resin River Table Do You Need?

River tables are made to order, so the size is entirely up to you. As a rough guide:

A 1.8m table seats 4–6 people comfortably and works well in most dining rooms.

A 2.2m table seats 6–8 and makes a real statement in a larger kitchen-diner or open-plan space.

Anything from a compact coffee table to a large boardroom centrepiece is within scope — we've made pieces for homes, restaurants, offices and commercial spaces across the UK.

The Bespoke Process: How It Works

One of the most common questions we get is: how does the process actually work? Here's what to expect when you commission a river table from Contemporary Resin Designs.

1. Initial conversation. We talk through your ideas — size, timber preference, resin colour, base style, where it will live and how it will be used. There's no obligation at this stage.

2. Design and quote. We put together a design proposal and a fixed quote so you know exactly what you're getting and what it costs.

3. Build. We source your timber slab, prepare it by hand, pour the resin in careful stages to ensure clarity and eliminate bubbles, and build your chosen base. We'll keep you updated with progress photos throughout.

4. Finishing. The table is sanded and finished to the level you've chosen — from a satin sheen to a high-gloss mirror finish.

5. Delivery and installation. We deliver and, where needed, install your table in person.

The typical lead time for a bespoke river table is 6–10 weeks, depending on complexity and timber availability.

How to Care for Your Resin River Table

One of the great practical benefits of our our epoxy resin tables is how easy it is to maintain. Here's what you need to know:

Treat it just like you would any other worktops. Keep it clean with a soft, damp cloth. Out finishing topcoat is Heat, scratch and UV resistant along with being food safe.

Whilst avoiding  prolonged direct sunlight is recommended on resin, because  of our topcoat, we mitigate the potential of yellowing. Like any table, positioning your it away from harsh direct sun will keep it looking its best for longer.

Use coasters and table mats for hot items. While resin is heat-resistant, it's good practice — just as you would with any quality table surface.

With basic care, a well-made resin river table will look stunning for decades.
